I’m Rachel and welcome to Knit Republic.

Why knit?

For me, it can be summed up in the quote below;

Knitting is very much a part of that age-old pursuit of the beautiful.  Many patterns known today were first formed by hands that have become dust hundreds or even thousands of years ago; but the same patterns may still be formed by other hands.  Thus knitting is a true folk art, in that it has been developed over the course of centuries by millions of ordinary people, whose delight it was to create beauty with their hands.

-A Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G Walker

To me, a hand knitted item represents the hours that the maker was willing to put into learning and practicing their craft, the attention to each stitch, the expression of their personality through choice of colour, fibre and pattern.  In a digital world, knitting is an analog hobby; you have to sit down and patiently work it, stitch by stitch, and although there will be tears, and some days you realise you have undone more than you started with, if you keep going you will end up with something special, unique and immeasurably satisfying.

My aim is to contribute to the amazing online creative community, share my knitting knowledge and experience and work towards creating a Knit Republic!
